Underground Roof Tunnel
What You’ll Learn
This VR training immerses you in the high-risk environment of post-blast inspection in underground tunnelling or mining operations. Designed in line with NEBOSH and ISO 45001 standards, the course equips you with the practical skills to identify and mitigate potential hazards near the tunnel face following a controlled blast.
Key learning outcomes include:
Understanding the post-blasting inspection process and safety protocols
Recognising typical hazards such as loose rock, unstable surfaces, and fall risks
Using appropriate scaling tools and lighting equipment for safe navigation and inspection
Knowing when to apply temporary ground support or escalate to the foreman
Learning how to collaborate with co-workers when hazards require additional manpower
Safely barricading high-risk areas and communicating findings clearly and promptly
Differentiating between remediable hazards and those requiring design-level support interventions
This training builds essential decision-making and hazard recognition capabilities in environments where situational awareness and rapid response can mean the difference between safety and catastrophe.
The Scenario
The simulation begins deep underground, where you receive a work permit from the site foreman in a designated control room. From there, you collect your rock scaling tool and proceed through the tunnel toward the face where the recent blast occurred.
As you walk through the passage:
You’ll identify loose rocks, fall hazards, or signs of structural instability
Use your tool to remove or stabilise hazards, or call for a co-worker’s assistance if the risk exceeds your ability
For unmanageable hazards, you’ll barricade the area and report it immediately to the foreman
Upon reaching the blast zone, you’ll use your headlamp to inspect the dark, unsupported area, scanning for hidden dangers that could compromise safety.
The VR environment is dynamic—hazards are randomised during training and exam modes to ensure that each session provides a unique, realistic challenge, helping you build the awareness and judgment required in live operations.
