Lockout Tagout (LOTO)
What You’ll Learn
This VR training focuses on mastering the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedure for isolating electrical and hydraulic hazardous energy sources—a critical safety protocol for maintenance and repair tasks. Based on NEBOSH and ISO 45001 standards, the training walks you through the full process of physically securing equipment to prevent unexpected energy release.
Key learning outcomes include:
Reviewing and following a work permit checklist specific to energy isolation tasks
Accessing the locking station using a master key to obtain authorised LOTO equipment
Deactivating electrical and hydraulic systems, and verifying zero energy state
Installing lockout devices and individual locks with keys for authorised users
Attaching clearly labelled tags that include user name, date, and description of work
Tracing energy sources through piping and wiring diagrams, using signage and system layouts
Performing pressure checks and visual confirmations to ensure systems are fully isolated
Securing all lockout keys in the station and handing over the master key to the supervisor
This training builds essential procedural knowledge, situational awareness, and accountability—ensuring participants understand how to eliminate risk before starting work on high-energy equipment.
The Scenario
You’ll begin at an industrial facility where your first task is to complete the work permit checklist and retrieve the required LOTO tools from the locking station using the master key. Your assigned task is to isolate an electrical pump and its connected hydraulic pipeline.
The steps include:
Switching off the electrical pump, verifying its de-energised state
Beginning the lockout process by applying physical blockers, padlocks, and identification tags
Navigating through the facility using pipe markings and system diagrams to locate isolation points
Locking out each valve or switch and checking pressure levels to confirm a safe shutdown
Ensuring the targeted section of the pipeline is fully isolated and documented
Returning all keys to the locking station and handing over the master key to the site supervisor
The simulation delivers a realistic, step-by-step experience that reinforces the critical importance of proper lockout/tagout procedures in preventing injury and ensuring safe maintenance operations.
