Assistant Chief Accountant

mselect is looking to hire an Assistant Chief Accountant for a hospitality client in Basrah, Iraq. Candidates must have 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role. Fluency in both English and Arabic is a must.

Job Summary
The Assistant Chief Accountant supports the Chief Accountant in managing the hotel’s financial and accounting operations. The role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, and the effective implementation of internal controls. It also contributes to financial oversight, process improvement initiatives, and team supervision, while providing management with reliable financial analysis to support informed decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Chief Accountant in overseeing all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
  • Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable accounting standards
  • Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes in coordination with department heads
  • Analyse financial performance, identify variances, and provide recommendations to management
  • Supervise daily accounting operations and provide guidance and support to accounting staff
  • Ensure timely completion of month-end and year-end closing activities
  • Monitor and strengthen internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure financial integrity
  • Support cost control initiatives and drive operational efficiency improvements
  • Act on behalf of the Chief Accountant when required

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Professional certification (CPA, ACCA, CMA, or equivalent) preferred
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity
  • Proven experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and variance analysis
  • Proficiency in accounting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience in the hospitality or service industry is an advantage
  • Good command of English (written and spoken)
