Course Overview

This course provides participants with a practical introduction to accounting principles and practices. It covers the accounting cycle, financial statements, and the essential techniques used to record and interpret financial information. By the end, participants will have the knowledge and skills needed to understand business transactions, prepare accounts, and analyse financial data to support decision-making.

Day 1 – Introduction to Accounting

  • Role and importance of accounting in business

  • Users of accounting information

  • The accounting equation and key principles

  • Accounting terminology

Day 2 – Recording Transactions

  • Double-entry bookkeeping

  • Journals and ledgers

  • Debit and credit rules

  • Preparing a trial balance

Day 3 – Adjustments and Error Corrections

  • Adjusting entries (accruals, prepayments, depreciation)

  • Correcting errors in accounting records

  • Finalising the trial balance

Day 4 – Financial Statements

  • Income Statement: revenue and expense recognition

  • Balance Sheet: assets, liabilities, and equity

  • Preparing financial statements from trial balance

Day 5 – Cash Flow, Equity & Basic Financial Analysis

  • Overview of the cash flow statement

  • Statement of changes in equity

  • Introduction to ratio analysis (liquidity, profitability)

  • Final review and Q&A
